October 2, 2026
Background and Award Information
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and Pace Suburban Bus have issued a joint RFP, with CTA as lead agency, seeking qualified electric bus manufacturers to supply heavy-duty 40-foot battery-electric transit buses. The order includes a base of 20 buses for CTA (with options for up to 80 additional) and 10 buses for Pace (with options for up to 140 additional), along with associated spare parts, warranty services, and quality assurance documentation. Buses must have a minimum expected life of 15 years or 600,000 miles and support both suburban express and urban service. This procurement advances CTA's "Charging Forward" plan to fully electrify its bus fleet by 2040. The successful proposer will be awarded two separate contracts, one with CTA and one with Pace, with additional bus options exercised depending on funding availability.
