Background and Award Information
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is accepting concept papers through its 2026 Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for innovative research projects that improve the safety, reliability, efficiency, and accessibility of public transportation. Projects must address a specific FTA research topic and may include technology development and demonstration, applied research, and innovative approaches to transit operations and infrastructure. The solicitation is unrestricted, with eligible applicants including state and local governments, universities, nonprofits, private businesses, and other responsible entities.
Awards may be of any value, although FTA anticipates that most individual federal awards will range from $150,000 to $500,000, subject to availability of funds. Projects involving transit operators and other industry partners, including projects with cost sharing, are preferred.
Important Dates
Concept papers due: October 19, 2026 (11:59 PM ET)
FTA will aim to evaluate concept papers within 60 days of receipt. Applicants with concepts of interest to FTA may then be invited to submit a detailed technical and cost proposal.
