The Replicable V2X Deployment for Schools project, funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Clean Transportation Program, seeks to work with school districts in investor-owned utility territories that have not completed a vehicle-to-grid interconnection. Before operation, this project will provide all stakeholders with opportunities to work through the planning, procurement, installation, and interconnection of V2G systems, giving needed experience on both the industry and utility sides to better prepare all parties for future V2G work. The common understanding of processes and requirements will provide much needed streamlining of V2G implementation for all parties. Further, the entry of these resources into the Emergency Load Reduction Program and Demand Side Grid Support mechanisms will build a dataset of V2G school bus participation that both industry and utility stakeholders need to see to build confidence in the proposition and bring new entrants into the market. All of these learnings will be disseminated through a robust community engagement and knowledge-sharing process.
To execute this project, The Mobility House (TMH), as the recipient, has assembled a team of partners including the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) alongside the World Resources Institute and New Energy Solutions. Project customers are three school districts in California: Pittsburg Unified School District, Fremont Unified School District, and Napa Unified School District.
CTE will provide project management, data collection, analysis services, resource tracking, and general administrative support on behalf of TMH. CTE will support TMH in collecting and reporting various data parameters to measure operational performance and realized benefits (e.g., actual energy savings, cost savings, and greenhouse gas emissions reductions) resulting from deployment of charging infrastructure. These indicators, when combined, will support the program evaluation and allow the team to fully understand the estimated benefits, including impact on emissions and reductions in fuel consumption and cost. CTE will also assist in grant administration and execution and help TMH achieve overall project performance targets that are compliant with requirements established by the CEC for the project.
As of Q2 2024, the project team has conducted a formal kickoff and is working closely with the school districts to develop site plans and construction schedules.
