Atlanta, GA — The Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) is launching a new initiative to enhance how public transit agencies manage and utilize data to improve bus operations and accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fleets.

Transit agencies collect vast amounts of operational data from vehicles, charging and fueling stations, and utility meters, but this data is often fragmented and difficult to integrate. This project, funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the Transit Vehicle Innovation Deployment Centers (TVIDC) program, aims to simplify and standardize data access by developing and testing data connections that unify key data streams, providing agencies with a clear and standardized approach to managing and analyzing data.

By creating "Reference Connections" that link these various data sources, transit agencies will be able to track performance more effectively, make data-driven decisions, and optimize operations. The project will establish a common data model that allows agencies to integrate real-time information into a centralized system, improving fleet management, maintenance, and service delivery.

Working with transit agencies and technology providers, CTE will ensure the data model meets practical needs while also laying the groundwork for future data standards in the transit industry. This initiative will help streamline the transition to zero-emission buses by making data more accessible and actionable, ultimately supporting more efficient, cost-effective operations.

“By improving data integration, we're not only helping agencies better manage their zero-emission bus fleets, we’re also setting the stage for the next wave of innovation in sustainable transportation,” said CTE Executive Director Dan Raudebaugh.

Under the TVIDC program, CTE is poised to deliver an ambitious portfolio of projects that advance the adoption of zero-emission transit solutions. Each project is designed to address critical barriers to zero-emission technology, such as cost, durability, and performance, providing comprehensive solutions for transit agencies. CTE's efforts will also include detailed project management, stakeholder engagement, and data collection and analysis, ensuring that each initiative contributes valuable insights and actionable outcomes to propel the industry toward a sustainable, zero-emission future.
